I had great difficulty finishing The Singularity is Near as the views expressed conflicted with my value and belief system. I am however fascinated with the research activities in technology and how so many areas are being redefined. Algorithms truly are a marvel. The title for this post is a bit tongue in cheek but there are aspects of what we've considered human that are being algorithmically challenged. So in a sense aspects of "us" are algorithms.

I do worry about where this is taking us. I suppose I'm of mixed feelings about the exponential technologically driven changes we are seeing and wonder what future impacts we'll experience good and bad.

Cheers,
BrianBrian Kuhnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12565982072371979984noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1668205114513391831.post-59220398666064912602013-04-07T11:45:27.144-07:002013-04-07T11:45:27.144-07:00Hi Brian,
I haven't read Kurzweil's most ...Hi Brian,

I haven't read Kurzweil's most recent, but I've got copies of most of his other texts - six or seven, if I'm not mistaken. Obviously, then, I share your enthusiasm for Kurzweil's vision. However, I'm also cognizant of how viciously Kurzweil has been critiqued, and might opt for a little less techno-positivism and a few caveats.

First, I think you've made an egregious error making the positivistic claim that "algorithms are us". This is, in the purest sense, a confusion of the map for the territory, or the menu for the meal. Algorithms aren't reality. They're a language for navigating and apprehending reality. Agents aren't algorithms. Instead, algorithms are effects of agents.

Second, I worry that the dystopic features of Kurzweil's analysis may warrant more scrutiny. Kurzweil is quite weak, for instance, when it comes to analyzing technology's role in aggravating inequalities. As things stand, if there's anything like a Kurzweil-ian Singularity, it'll be highly hierarchical and a very scary world to live in. Kurzweil has, of course, been strongly critiqued on these points, but there is no sense of this context in your post.

For a general intro to /critical/ analysis of techno-fetishism, I invite you to see => Amor Mundi - http://amormundi.blogspot.ca/

Regards,
TobeyTobeyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16156778438683480700noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1668205114513391831.post-502726427101414202013-03-26T20:35:07.626-07:002013-03-26T20:35:07.626-07:00Hey Dave, that's one of the cool things about ...Hey Dave, that's one of the cool things about social media - the connections persist! We have significant challenges with both here and both are high priorities. It will take some time to raise the bar and remove the barriers.

I like to drive those changes from a place of purpose. The learning & work ecosystem vision provides purpose to hook it all together for learning, teaching, and working to flourish in digital spaces and places.
